MRI of Spine

Our saga continues with tre[edation. My daughter's otho requested a full spine MRI. It was painful for her to lie down and they needed to accomodate her neck and back pain. They were adamant about gowns which she hates and the other MRI place knows her well and lets her wear her own clothes. So it wasn't as easy As I had hoped. They called shortly after we got home and they are reauesting a IV contrast which will be at an office farther away. We did get a DVD of her spine which surprised me. Has anyone had this proceedure?

Also as an FYI to adults. My Mom was just dx with uterine cancer that has spread to her spine. She had been complaining of pain for over two years especially since Janauary and my daughter's second surgery. She had been to two ortho and a geriatric specialist. It wasn't until she admitted to vaginal bleeding for a short while to her reg. doc that she was admitted an a MRI of her spine was done. I feel bad I didn't push her more because I knew her pain even with a pain managment doc was not good. My daughter has had better pain management that she did. Of course, now both girls are worried they have spine cancer as well! But just to show you never know.

Sorry about your mom and your daughter! What a lot you are having to deal with.

As for MRIs, I did have an MRI of my spine. My doc does it routinely before surgery to look at the quality of the discs. I also got a DVD, but no contrast.

Had to read this more than once to be sure whose pain you were referring to - your daughter or your mom. Your life has indeed become a surreal phantasmagoria of pain, to such a point. For a parent to know of a child's agony is a special reflected agony in ways worse than being inside the hurting body and mind.

It's way too much. I'm angry on your behalf . So often care-givers are unable to say what they really feel, parents especially. And children can feel they need to shield parents too. I hope your daughter feels she can talk about her pain and very glad she has a therapist to talk to. Bottled up pain can actually hurt more, physically.

I hope you will keep writing us - both to unload as much as you can and to keep us informed. We DO understand and care more than most are able to (and even so, your story is mind and soul-boggling).

I also very much hope you have on the spot support persons with whom nothing needs to be censored or toned down. Sometimes people can feel so personally threatened by the kind of pain your family is experiencing, they withdraw as if it were contagious.

More Infection that wasn't caught?

Thanks again for the support. The girls have lost their soccer friends, more through fear than anything else. And alot of my friends are burnt out- we have so much more we are dealing with. One friend has been great.
I did reading on why contrast MRI 's are requested after an MRI. Infection is one reason, so now I have to worry about that. Infection is a continuing concern for the next surgery in that they are planning to get a stat culture before doing any real surgery. So maybe it never was completely treated. The phone call came fast. Any thoughts? I am planning to call the doc for the pain issue. I hae avoided calling him and have used his nurse but this really worries me. Thanks. Mary
